Kastro
Kastro is the island’s oldest settlement; built as a fortress to protect against pirates, it dates back to the early years of Latin rule in the 15th century.
It is situated on the edge of a cliff, 280 meters above sea level.
This is the heart of the place: the Square, the Town Hall, the medical clinic, the shops, and the coffee houses form the center of the island’s social life. A stroll through the settlement allows you to admire old mansions and the gilded wood-carved iconostasis in the Church of Pantanassa, located in the Kastro Square. Just a little further up—now merged with Kastro—lies Vouni; situated at the edge of a cliff, it embraces the northern side of the settlement. Vouni was the island’s agricultural hub, featuring windmills, olive presses, and more.
Chorio
The Village is an example of a traditional Cycladic settlement.
The Village possessed a self-contained character, featuring windmills and ovens. It is a small labyrinth of narrow lanes, old houses, stone walls, steep uphill paths, passageways, hidden corners, flowerbeds, and flights of steps. Anyone who climbs up here should listen for the silent sound of a very old, lost world. Do not overlook this sound; it is the most precious thing Sikinos has to offer.
There are no commercial shops in the Village.
Sights and Walks
Alopronia
Alopronia is the port of Sikinos, located roughly midway along the island’s southern coast.
It is the island’s largest beach, featuring houses and rental rooms just steps away from the sea.
This is the departure point for the bus to Chora and Episkopi, as well as for the boat excursions to the remote beaches of Sikinos.
